De Duiventoren, Nature reserve in North Brabant, Netherlands.
De Duiventoren is a nature reserve located between Dongen and Rijen featuring wetlands and forested sections managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Walking trails crisscross the site, allowing visitors to move between the different habitats and landscapes throughout the year.
Between 1600 and 1800, an area called Het Moerken was used for peat extraction, which shaped the swampy terrain that exists today. This earlier industrial use fundamentally transformed the landscape and created the conditions for present-day ecosystems.
The name comes from a historic pigeon tower that once stood in this area and served local residents. Today this name reflects the long relationship between people and the land in this region.
The site is accessible year-round with clear walking paths that are manageable on foot. It is wise to bring weather-resistant clothing and sturdy footwear with good grip, as the ground becomes muddy especially after rain.
The reserve contains contemporary art installations placed unexpectedly along the natural paths. This mixture of nature and art creates surprising moments of discovery while exploring the area.
