Castle Op Genhoes

Castle Op Genhoes is a fortified residence in Brunssum with a gatehouse dating to the 1500s and living quarters built using traditional local architectural styles. The entire property was once surrounded by water-filled moats that no longer remain.

In 1622, two brothers named Willem and Godart Vos commissioned this stone structure to replace their earlier wooden fortress called Vossenleen. This shift showed their desire to build something more lasting and secure.

The castle was home to the Baron de Negri family, who held positions as mayors of Brunssum during the 1800s. You can sense how this family shaped life around the estate for generations.

One wing of the structure was renovated in 2002 and now forms part of a modern housing development at Hoogenboschweg 2. It sits easily accessible within a residential area.

When demolition work took place in 1930, workers uncovered the foundations of an incomplete tower that stood between the barn and the main house. This discovery suggests construction plans were significantly altered at some point.
