Slangenburg Castle

The U-shaped brick castle features a moat, grand wings on three sides, and stands amid the extensive Slangenburg forest near Doetinchem.

Built in 1354 as a manor house, the castle underwent major reconstruction in 1675 under Frederik Johan van Baer, who transformed it into its current form.

The castle interior displays 17th-century Dutch craftsmanship through ornate wall panels, stucco ceilings, and allegorical paintings by Gerard Hoet.

Visitors can stay at the castle, which functions as a guesthouse for St. Willibrord's Abbey, with all rooms including full board services.

The castle grounds contain a private cemetery next to the moat where members of the former German owners, the Passmann family, rest.
