Moerdijkbruggen

The Moerdijkbruggen are two parallel railway bridges crossing a major waterway and connecting two important land regions. The older structure dates from the 1800s, while a newer construction was added later to handle increased traffic.

The first bridge was built over 150 years ago and was a significant engineering achievement at that time. A second bridge was later constructed to meet modern traffic demands.

The bridge complex enables a vital connection between regions, making daily commuting between north and south possible. People use this crossing every day for their travels, and it represents the infrastructure that brings communities together.

Visitors can view the bridge from various vantage points accessible from surrounding roads and paths. The best views are available from the bridge approaches or from roads near the crossing.

The bridge had to be built using special techniques to remain stable on soft Dutch soil. At the same time, the structure was designed to allow ships to pass underneath.
