Veenkoloniaal Museum

The Veenkoloniaal Museum contains exhibits about peat colonies, maritime trade, and agricultural development of the Groninger region through detailed artifacts and photographs.

The museum occupies a 1911 building that served as a school until 1989, when it was transformed into a cultural institution dedicated to preserving local heritage.

The museum displays collections of Staffordshire dogs and other souvenirs that local sailors acquired during their trading voyages to England and Portugal.

The facility maintains lockers for storing large bags and wet clothing, while allowing flash-free photography throughout the exhibition spaces.

Located 40 kilometers from the coast, the museum documents how inland villages developed extensive maritime trade networks through a system of canals.
