Urk Lighthouse, Maritime navigation point in Urk, Netherlands.
The white cylindrical brick tower rises 18.5 meters high with a red lantern topped by a green dome on the eastern banks of IJsselmeer.
The first beacon at this location started operating in 1617 with a coal fire to direct ships sailing between Amsterdam and the North Sea.
The lighthouse received national monument status in 1982, representing the maritime navigation heritage of the Dutch fishing community.
The lighthouse emits a flashing signal every five seconds with an intensity of 40,000 candela, reaching vessels up to 33 kilometers away.
The original rotating mechanism used weights hanging in the tower center, which remain in place despite modern automatic systems.
