Kasteel Zuidewijn

Kasteel Zuidewijn is a castle in Waalwijk featuring a protruding central section with stair gables and a right wing. The residence sits within gardens that blend into the surrounding landscape near a nature reserve.

The original castle was destroyed during the Saint Elisabeth flood of 1421, after which its name was transferred to another building. The current structure emerged later and was shaped through various alterations over the centuries.

The castle long served as a seat for the Van der Merwede family, who shaped and managed the estate across generations. This family's connection to the place created a strong local bond that still echoes in the region's history today.

The castle stands at Hogevaart 60 and is a private residence that can be viewed from the nearby road. Access to observe the exterior comes through open routes that offer views of the architecture without entering private grounds.

The garden side on the southeast received its current shape during major modifications in the 18th century. A century later, the bell tower and entrance were completely renewed, and they have defined the exterior appearance since then.
