Wedderborg

The Wedderborg is a medieval stronghold near the Westerwoldse Aa river, featuring stone walls and a surrounding moat with architectural elements from three centuries. The building now serves as both a hotel and restaurant, showcasing how different periods left their marks on its structure.

Built around 1370 by Egge Addinga for the Bishop of Münster, the stronghold became the administrative center of the Westerwolde region. This construction reflected the power struggles between religious authorities and local leaders in a remote border area that lasted for centuries.

The name reflects the family who built and controlled it, and today visitors experience how medieval strongholds were transformed into gathering places. Dining and staying here connects people directly to the daily life of centuries past.

The site now operates as a hotel and restaurant where guests can dine and stay within historic walls. Keep in mind that rooms retain their original medieval structure, so visitors may encounter narrow doorways, low ceilings, and uneven floors typical of period buildings.

Between 1587 and 1597, the stronghold witnessed witch trials where 22 people were accused and executed on its grounds. This dark chapter reveals how the location became entangled in one of history's most troubling episodes during that tense period.
