Buitenkerk, Gothic church in Kampen, Netherlands.
The Buitenkerk is a parish church with three brick naves displaying Gothic architecture and a massive tower. The building features characteristic medieval details including numerous water spouts and a commanding tower structure.
Construction of this second parish church began in 1369 under master builder Rutger van Ceulen. The tower was completed in 1453, marking the end of a lengthy building phase.
The church takes its name from the Buitenhoek district, which lay beyond the city walls when it was built in the 14th century. This location outside the original fortifications shaped how residents viewed and used this parish space.
The building is typically open Wednesday to Saturday from 13:30 to 16:30, primarily during summer months and the Open Monument Weekend. Check ahead for current opening times, as these vary by season and special events.
The upper section of the tower collapsed in 1609, destroying three bells made by renowned bell maker Geert van Wou. This collapse was a turning point in the building's history and permanently altered its appearance.
