Vortum-Mullem, Village in Land van Cuijk, Netherlands
Vortum-Mullem is a small village in the Land van Cuijk region in the southern Netherlands, situated close to the Maas river. It is made up of two formerly separate settlements that now form a single community centered around a church.
The village name joins two old meanings: Vortum refers to a ford, a crossing point over a river, while Mullem points to a mill that once stood nearby. The two parts were officially merged in 1942, after existing separately for centuries.
Every year on Carnival Monday, Vortum-Mullem hosts the Boxmeerse Metworstrennen, a traditional horse race held in a field between the village and Sambeek. The event draws people from across the region and marks the heart of the local Carnival celebration.
The village sits along regional roads and is easy to reach by car, with the nearby villages of Sambeek and Stevensbeek just a short drive away. A nature trail set up by the IVN runs through the surrounding river landscape and is well suited for a walk.
Just outside the village, river dunes rise between the Maas and the fields, and badgers have made their home there. This kind of habitat is rare this close to a small farming village, making it a good spot for watching wildlife.
