Jacobikerk, Uithuizen

Jacobikerk is a church building in Uithuizen that begins with a stone tower from the 12th century, followed by a nave from the 13th century and a choir from the 15th century. These construction phases show how the structure grew over several centuries.

The church was originally dedicated to Saint Dionysius and became a Protestant place of worship after the Reformation in the 16th century. This change reflects the religious shifts that took place across the Groningen region.

The interior holds works by Groningen artist Allert Meijer, including the organ case and choir screen from the early 18th century. These pieces reflect the craftsmanship that shaped this place during that era.

Instead of a typical weathercock, the church tower has displayed a mermaid figure for over 350 years, becoming a symbol of Eemsmond municipality. This unusual decoration is a surprising discovery for many visitors.
