Rijsbergen, Hotel in den Niederlanden
Rijsbergen is a former guesthouse on the island of Schiermonnikoog located within walking distance of the village center. The building closed to visitors in early 2019 and now serves as a monastery for Cistercian monks.
The building began as a guesthouse offering travelers a comfortable place to stay on the island. It transitioned to a monastery in 2019, fundamentally changing its purpose and now reflecting the quiet spiritual life of the island.
The former house sits within walking distance of village shops and restaurants on the island. Since it is now a monastery, it is no longer available for overnight stays and is not open for tourist visits.
The house once featured a large garden with seating areas and intentionally no televisions in rooms to encourage guests to slow down. This focus on quiet and nature mirrored the slower rhythm of island life.
