Nirwanaflat, Modernist residential tower in The Hague, Netherlands.
Nirwanaflat is a modernist residential tower in The Hague featuring continuous rows of windows across its facades and standing approximately 30 meters tall. The six-story building with its concrete skeleton structure houses apartments equipped with an elevator, central heating, and complete water systems.
The building was completed in 1929 by architect Jan Duiker and engineer Jan Gerko Wiebenga. For three years it held the distinction of being the tallest residential tower in the Netherlands.
This building represents a shift in Dutch housing design from traditional brick methods to modern materials like concrete and glass. The structure showed how residential life could be organized in a new way with these contemporary building techniques.
The building is a listed monument and can be viewed from street level, though it remains private residential housing. Visitors can appreciate the architectural details from the exterior without entering the structure.
The original design called for five interconnected residential towers with courtyards, but only one structure was built due to constraints. This single tower represents an unrealized vision of a much larger complex.
