Máximapark, Urban park in Vleuten, Netherlands
Máximapark is an urban park in the Vleuten district of Utrecht, crossed by a paved loop path called Het Lint that links different garden and recreational areas throughout the grounds. The park is divided into several landscaped zones, including a Japanese garden, a butterfly garden, and open areas set up for different outdoor activities.
The park was designed by the architecture firm West 8 and opened in 2006 as part of a broader urban development project on the western edge of Utrecht. It was built to bring green space into the new residential areas growing around Vleuten and De Meern.
The Japanese garden inside the park features a pagoda and curved bridges over small ponds. The plantings and water elements are arranged according to traditional Japanese garden principles, and the contrast with the surrounding Dutch landscape is immediately noticeable.
The park has separate paths for cyclists, runners, and horse riders, so it helps to check which path is meant for your activity before you start. Runners will find TimePoints at several spots along Het Lint where they can log their times.
The Vlinderhof section of the park is planted with species chosen specifically to attract butterflies and bees, such as butterfly bushes and New York asters. On a warm summer day, you can watch several butterfly species moving from flower to flower just a short walk from the main path.
