Rondehoep, Nature area and polder in Ouder-Amstel, Netherlands
Rondehoep is a nature area and polder in Ouder-Amstel consisting of open grasslands enclosed by a protective ring dyke. A network of ditches and waterways runs through the land to manage water levels and drainage.
Between 1100 and 1300, settlers created this polder by digging a drainage system from nearby peat streams. A ring dyke was later constructed to protect the land from flooding and regulate water management.
The area maintains traditional Dutch water management practices through an integrated system of dykes, ditches, and pumping stations across the landscape.
A ring road around the polder allows access by car and bicycle for exploring the area. Walking across open fields is not recommended due to wet and marshy conditions underfoot.
The area functions as an emergency water storage zone that can be deliberately flooded up to 50 centimeters when flood risks increase. This approach shows how modern water management protects surrounding neighborhoods from overflow events.
