Studentencomplex IBB, Student housing complex in East district, Utrecht, Netherlands
Studentencomplex IBB is a residential development in Utrecht's eastern district composed of one high-rise tower and fifteen low-rise residential buildings. Together they provide housing for over 1,200 students and are laid out to create shared outdoor spaces between the different structures.
The complex was built in 1966 and initially housed athletes competing in the European Swimming Championships. Once the event ended, it was converted into permanent student housing and has served that purpose for decades.
The residential spaces encourage shared living, where groups of students gather in common kitchens and lounges, creating a community feel throughout the complex.
The complex sits between Utrecht city center and the De Uithof university campus, giving residents quick access to academic spaces and shops. The central location makes it easy to reach most amenities on foot or by short travel.
When it first opened, the buildings were separated by gender and students had no private kitchens, as meals were served in a central cafeteria for everyone. This arrangement created a tightly knit residential community in those early years.
