Crailo, Residential hamlet in Huizen, Netherlands
Crailo is a residential hamlet situated near Huizen that spans across boundaries of several municipalities along the A1 motorway. The area incorporates parts of Huizen, Naarden, Bussum, Blaricum, and Laren, functioning as a transitional zone between these communities.
The name originates from Krayloo, first documented in 1442 and derived from Kraaienbos, an old Dutch term. In the early 1600s, a Van Rensselaer family member acquired the estate, and the land later became a military installation.
The former military base, Kamp Crailo, trained conscript soldiers and later transformed into an asylum seekers residence known as AZC Crailo.
The area sits directly along the A1 motorway and provides quick access to Amsterdam. When visiting, remember that it spans multiple municipal boundaries, so there is no single central hub or concentrated amenities.
Several buildings from the former Colonel Palm Barracks create a preserved ensemble within the modern residential development. These structures provide a visual contrast to the newer construction and serve as reminders of the area's military past.
