Ganzen Geesje, Bronze sculpture on Market Square in Coevorden, Netherlands.
Ganzen Geesje is a bronze sculpture group featuring a girl holding a goose surrounded by ten additional birds arranged in a pentagonal basin. The figures are life-sized and positioned at the north end of Coevorden's Market Square.
The artwork was funded through a community fundraising campaign launched by Mayor Willem Hoekzema during the 1970s. The city gathered the necessary contributions to create this monument to an important local tradition.
The sculpture honors the women goose herders who brought their animals to market every second Monday in November until 1962. Their labor and role in community life are still visible through this public artwork.
The sculpture is located in the center of Market Square and is easily accessible on foot from the town center. The fountain is open year-round and offers a pleasant spot to visit or rest while exploring the square.
The bronze geese have experienced several incidents of damage over the years, including the theft of one bird that was later recovered. These events demonstrate how much the community values and protects this artwork.
