Jopie Huisman Museum, Art museum in Workum, Netherlands.
The Jopie Huisman Museum is a museum in the Frisian town of Workum, dedicated to the paintings of the self-taught artist Jopie Huisman. His works depict worn-out objects, old clothes, tools, and rural scenes from the Frisian countryside, painted with close attention to surface and texture.
Jopie Huisman was born in Workum in 1922 and spent his entire life there, working as a scrap metal trader while painting on the side. After his death in 2000, the museum was set up in his hometown to keep his work accessible to the public.
The works here show rural Frisian life as it was lived, depicting farmyards, crafts, and everyday moments that shaped the region. Visitors experience how the artist documented the material world around his community through careful observation.
The museum sits in the center of Workum, a small town in the province of Friesland, easily reached by car or by bike along the regional cycling routes. It is worth checking opening times before you go, as hours can change depending on the time of year.
Huisman never sold a single painting during his lifetime and gave them away freely to people he met in his daily rounds as a trader. The museum building was designed by Hendrik Wouda, an architect also known for his work on protected monuments elsewhere in the Netherlands.
