Mariniersmonument, War memorial at Oostplein, Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Mariniersmonument is a bronze sculpture in Rotterdam depicting a Marine standing at attention. The figure rises about 3 meters and faces the location of the former marine barracks on Oostplein.
The memorial was unveiled in July 1963 to honor the Marine Corps, which played a key role defending the Netherlands in 1940. It commemorates the service of the marines in that pivotal moment and their operations across the globe in the decades that followed.
The surrounding wall displays inscriptions of Marine Corps achievements, including battles in Chatham and campaigns across the Dutch East Indies and Korea.
The memorial sits on Oostplein in central Rotterdam and is easy to reach on foot. The area is well-traveled and the site is open at all times, allowing visitors to stop by whenever they wish.
Ben Schierboom, whose body served as the model for the bronze figure, attended the 50th-anniversary commemoration in 2013. His presence connected the living history of the city with this silent memorial.
