Augustijnenkerk, Dordrecht, Gothic monastery church in Dordrecht, Netherlands.
The Augustijnenkerk is a late Gothic monastery church in the old town of Dordrecht with an eight-bay nave and a choir closed on three sides. Its architecture features columns with spiral capitals and barrel vaults that structure the space and define its scale.
A devastating fire in 1518 destroyed the earlier building, leading to reconstruction in the late Gothic style that we see today. This rebuilding left a lasting mark on the structure and made it a significant example of late Gothic architecture in the region.
The church functioned as a center of religious devotion with several smaller chapels where different families and believers gathered over the centuries. The interior chapels reflect the spiritual needs of the local community through their monuments and burial sites.
The church is located at Voorstraat 216 in the city center and is easily reached via the main street. As a protected national monument, it follows certain access rules that should be checked before your visit.
The bell tower houses a 66-centimeter bell cast by the renowned bell founder Pieter Hemony in 1673. This historical bell remains functional today and demonstrates the high craftsmanship of 17th-century metalwork.
