Motte Montferland, Medieval motte-and-bailey castle in Zeddam, Netherlands
Motte Montferland is a medieval motte-and-bailey fortress built on an artificial hill near Zeddam. The mound rises above defensive earthworks and a surrounding moat, set within the Bergherbos forest.
The site began as a medieval stronghold with the original name Montferrand. A siege in 1016 following disputes with Emperor Otto II of the Holy Roman Empire left it in ruins.
The Lords of Bergh built this stronghold to display their authority over the surrounding lands and people. Today, the site still conveys the importance it held for the local nobility.
The site is accessible on foot from Zeddam, with natural pathways through the surrounding forest. Visitors should prepare for uneven ground, exposed tree roots, and damp conditions, particularly after rainfall.
A hunting lodge built around 1700 crowns the summit and now functions as a hotel, allowing guests to stay overnight surrounded by medieval ruins. This blend of defensive stronghold and modern hospitality makes it a singular destination.
