Grote of Sint-Michaëlskerk, Gothic church in Oudewater, Netherlands.
The Grote or Sint-Michaëlskerk in Oudewater is a church with three aisles of equal width and height, covered by wooden barrel vaults. A 42-meter tower divided into four sections dominates the structure and is visible from the main square.
The building began around 1100 as a simple structure and underwent major changes around 1250, when a transept and choir were added. These changes transformed it into a cruciform church following medieval patterns.
The interior carries traces of different generations who shaped and maintained it over time. The furnishings show how the community adapted and renewed the space across centuries.
Entry to the church interior is through a passage at the tower's base that runs at street level. Visiting works best on days with services or by prior arrangement, as these are the typical times when access is available.
A memorial stone for mathematician Rudolph Snellius van Rooyen, a former professor in Leiden, is set into the west wall. His inscription recalls the scholarly importance this place once held.
