Nieuwendijk, Village in North Brabant, Netherlands
Nieuwendijk is a small village in the Altena municipality in North Brabant, nestled in a rural landscape of water and meadows. The settlement includes a Reformed church and local shops that serve the community's everyday needs.
The village was first recorded in 1468 as Nyewendijck and originated from workers who built and maintained the dikes and cut reeds in the wetlands. These origins shaped how the settlement developed alongside the water landscape.
The International Booker Prize recipient Marieke Lucas Rijneveld spent childhood years in Nieuwendijk near the River Bakkerskil before gaining literary recognition.
The village is reached by local roads and has basic services for daily needs. Visitors should expect a rural setting best explored on foot or by bicycle.
Following the closure of Haringvliet in 1970, the characteristic reed beds that defined the regional landscape disappeared from the surrounding area.
