Mattemburgh, Nature reserve and estate in Hoogerheide, Netherlands.
Mattemburgh is an estate covering about 150 hectares of forest and gardens near Bergen op Zoom. The property includes a neoclassical villa, an Orangerie, and multiple walking routes through forest and garden landscapes.
The estate was founded in 1847 when Maria van Mattemburgh, widow of Bergen op Zoom's mayor, established the property on transitional soil lands. The gardens developed between 1843 and 1878, reflecting design practices of that era.
The gardens reflect both English and French design traditions visible throughout the walking paths. The villa, Orangerie, and specialized flower beds together show how 1800s estate owners expressed their taste through landscape design.
The park is accessible on foot through two marked walking routes that lead through forest and garden landscapes. The Orangerie serves as both a restaurant and visitor hub where you can find refreshments and get oriented.
The eastern forest section has been left untouched since 1885, allowing dead wood to create natural habitats for insects and wildlife. This hands-off forest management is unusual in Europe and shows how wilderness regenerates itself.
