Netherlands Media Art Institute, Media art museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Netherlands Media Art Institute is a research center focused on preserving digital artworks, video art, and technology-based artistic projects created over decades. The collection brings together works by Dutch and international artists exploring how technology shapes creative expression.
The institute was founded in 1978 as MonteVideo and grew into an important archive for media art over the decades. After 2013, it shifted its focus toward research and digital presentation rather than on-site public exhibitions.
The institute manages media art collections from multiple Dutch foundations and museums, including De Appel Foundation and the Groninger Museum, through its digital Mediatheque platform.
The center is located at Keizersgracht 264, but it functions primarily as a research space and online platform rather than as a regular public destination with set visiting hours. Contacting the organization in advance is recommended to learn about available resources or planned activities.
The institute documents not just the artworks themselves but also preserves the original experience and technical environment in which computer-generated pieces were created. This means artists and researchers can access the original files and system settings to understand how a work actually appeared when first made.
