World Peace Flame, Peace memorial near Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands
The World Peace Flame is a stone pillar with an eternal flame burning at its center, encircled by a pathway containing stones from 197 different countries. The simple structure sits open to visitors who can walk around and examine the contributions from each nation.
The monument emerged from an initiative to create a lasting peace symbol, bringing together stones from all UN member nations starting in the early 2000s. This global contribution reflected a shared commitment to remembering periods of division and working toward unity.
The stone collection includes fragments from the Berlin Wall and Robben Island, representing the geological diversity of participating nations. Walking around the circle, you encounter pieces that tell stories of conflict and reconciliation from different parts of the world.
The memorial is located near the Peace Palace and easily reached by public transport. The grounds feature flat, accessible pathways that allow visitors to walk freely around the stone circle.
Seven separate flames gathered from five continents were merged into a single burning light that has remained lit continuously. This joining of different fires into one represents the merging of separate peoples and purposes into unified intent.
