Welgelegen, Flour windmill in Heerenveen, Netherlands.
Welgelegen is a flour windmill in Heerenveen built with an eight-sided wooden structure and traditional Dutch design. The mill sits on a raised foundation and features a viewing platform where visitors can look out over the surrounding town.
The mill was built in 1849 by millwright Willem Frederick Looman and ground grain for roughly 70 years serving the local community. It was one of many mills that developed Heerenveen from the 15th century onward and shaped the town's character.
The mill received recognition as a Rijksmonument in February 1967, marking its status as a protected Dutch cultural heritage structure.
The mill is open to visitors on Saturday mornings and offers guided tours by appointment. It is easily reachable in the town center with parking available nearby.
Of the seventeen mills that operated in Heerenveen from the 15th century onward, this is the only one still standing today. The structure received official protection as a Rijksmonument in 1967.
