The Nederlands Zouavenmuseum displays uniforms, photographs, and personal documents of Dutch soldiers who served in the Papal Zouaves infantry unit.
Located in a 1776 former town hall, the museum tells the story of 3,081 Dutch volunteers who defended the Papal States between 1864 and 1870.
The collection includes Pierre Cuypers' banner from the Battle of Mentana and paintings of notable Zouaves like Pieter Janszoon Jong and Ignace Wils.
The museum opens Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons from 13:30 to 16:30, with adult tickets priced at 5 euros.
The archive maintains letters and diaries from Zouave soldiers, offering researchers access to firsthand accounts of the Papal States' final years.
