Gedenknaald Baarn

Gedenknaald Baarn is a stone obelisk designed by Abraham van der Hart that stands in the gardens of Soestdijk Palace. The structure rises 201 centimeters tall and measures 136 centimeters wide, its slender vertical form creating a quiet focal point within the palace grounds.

Built in 1815, the monument commemorates the Dutch victory at the Battle of Waterloo and honors Willem Frederik, Prince of Orange. This date marks a pivotal moment in Dutch history following the Napoleonic Wars.

The monument displays inscriptions in multiple languages, reflecting the international dimensions of its message. Visitors walking around the structure can discover these different texts and sense the broader European connections of that time.

The monument is located on Torenlaan in Baarn and can be visited during the regular opening hours of the palace grounds. Access to the site comes through the palace area, and the gardens may be more or less crowded depending on the season.

The year 1815 is inscribed twice on the monument, using Arabic numerals on one side and Roman numerals on the other. This dual representation connects two different ways of recording time from that historical period.
