Hernen Castle, Medieval castle in Wijchen, Netherlands
Hernen Castle is a medieval castle in Wijchen, in the Netherlands, made up of four wings built around a central courtyard. The main gate on the eastern side dates to 1555 and gives the structure its defining front.
The earliest parts of the castle date to 1350, when it consisted of a keep and a curtain wall. The great tower fell in the 18th century, which changed the overall shape of the building.
Hernen Castle was used as a filming location for the Dutch television series Floris in 1968, where a young Rutger Hauer played the lead role. That connection to popular Dutch television still shapes how many visitors experience the place today.
The castle opens on specific days during the warmer months, and access can vary depending on the season. Checking opening days ahead of time helps to plan the visit more easily.
Hernen Castle is the only Dutch castle that still has a covered medieval wall-walk, a type of defensive feature that has not survived elsewhere in the country. This passage remains visible today and shows how the original builders constructed this part of the defenses.
