Communication Tower, Television tower in Waalhaven, Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The Communication Tower is a 207-meter-tall concrete structure in Waalhaven that broadcasts radio, television, and mobile signals across Rotterdam and surrounding areas. It has four platform levels equipped with multiple antennas working together to distribute different types of signals.
PTT constructed the tower in 1962 as part of the national telecommunications microwave link network at an original height of 106 meters. An expansion in 1983 added significant height to accommodate growing demands for broadcasting and mobile communications.
The tower serves as a recognizable landmark for Rotterdam residents and visitors navigating the city. It silently supports the daily flow of radio, television, and mobile signals that keep the region connected.
The tower is located in the Waalhaven industrial area and can be seen from several nearby roads. As an active broadcasting facility, the immediate surroundings are not open to public access and should be avoided for safety reasons.
The tower was built using the same slipform construction technique employed for Rotterdam's iconic Euromast. This specialized building method allowed engineers to efficiently create the tall concrete structure.
