De Huisman, Spice mill in Zaanse Schans, Netherlands
De Huisman is a spice mill with an eight-sided hood and wooden structure located on Kalverringdijk, using three pairs of millstones to grind spices and mustard seeds. The building displays the characteristic design of a traditional Dutch stelling mill and includes both a shop and working mill operations.
Built in 1786 as a snuff mill, the structure was relocated to its current location in 1955 to serve a new purpose. The relocation involved combining components from two separate mills and a paper warehouse to create the present-day building.
The mill operates using age-old spice grinding methods rooted in Dutch tradition, and the mustard produced here remains part of the regional food heritage.
The attached shop can be visited at no cost, while access to the working mill requires an admission ticket. Tickets are available at the Zaans Museum entrance and provide entry to the complete mill complex.
The grinding mechanisms inside originate from the spice mill Het Indisch Welvaren, demonstrating how craft equipment was preserved and reused across generations. Visitors can observe these authentic historical tools actually functioning in their grinding work.
