Fort Spijkerboor, Military fortification in Beemster, Netherlands
Fort Spijkerboor is a military fortification featuring walls approximately 1.5 meters thick, surrounded by a moat system within the Beemster polder landscape. The structure demonstrates classic fortress design with multiple chambers and defensive positions.
The fortress was built between 1889 and 1911 as part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a defensive ring protecting the Dutch capital. This system represented one of the first modern defensive lines constructed around a major city.
The fort contains original rooms that show daily military life from the early 1900s, including a preserved kitchen and generator room with their furnishings. Walking through these spaces gives a sense of how soldiers lived and worked here.
The fort is open to visitors on scheduled days throughout the month, and a guided tour is the best way to explore the military architecture and understand its layout. Check opening times beforehand as they vary seasonally.
The fort houses two original Krupp guns mounted in a preserved gun turret, representing some of the most powerful artillery pieces deployed in the Netherlands. These cannons demonstrate the defensive firepower positioned to protect the region.
