Kasteel Huize Ruurlo

Kasteel Huize Ruurlo is a castle with a square tower built in 1572 and an additional tower added in the 17th century, now serving as an art museum in Ruurlo. It houses a variety of art exhibitions within its stone walls across multiple rooms.

The Van Heeckeren family owned this castle from the 15th century until 1977, when they sold it to the municipality of Ruurlo. It was then converted into a town hall and later transformed into an art museum.

The castle displays artworks from the modern realism movement, particularly paintings by Carel Willink shown in rooms with rococo and baroque decorations. The exhibitions tell of 20th-century artistic trends and how they are experienced within this historic setting.

The castle is accessible by guided tour, and visitors can watch historical documentaries while enjoying refreshments at the 1879 Orangerie, which functions as a tearoom. Allow time to explore the exhibitions and rest in this historic setting.

The castle basement still retains its medieval walls and served as a filming location for the Dutch television series De Zevensprong during the 1980s. This hidden section gives the building a cinematic history that many visitors overlook.
