Kasteel Poederoijen are castle ruins located at the confluence of the Maas and Waal rivers in Zaltbommel. The remains display the structural layout of a medieval fortress that once served as a key defensive stronghold in this river region.
The castle was constructed in the 9th century and endured multiple sieges and rebuilding efforts across the centuries. It was destroyed in 1672 to prevent French occupation.
The castle grounds serve as a testament to medieval Dutch military architecture and regional power struggles between Brabant, Holland, and Gelderland territories.
The site is open to visitors and now functions as a venue for events and gatherings. The ruins can be explored on foot while taking in views of the surrounding river landscape.
During the late 15th century, the castle became a base for robbers led by Hendrik Ense, triggering regional conflicts. Intervention by the Duke of Gelderland eventually ended this troublesome period.
