The remains of Kasteel Poederoijen stand at the meeting point of the Maas and Waal rivers, marking a strategic defensive position in the Dutch landscape.
Built in 870 by Baldwin II, Lord of Heusden, the castle underwent multiple sieges and reconstructions before its final demolition to prevent French occupation in 1672.
The castle grounds serve as a testament to medieval Dutch military architecture and regional power struggles between Brabant, Holland, and Gelderland territories.
The castle site currently functions as a venue for meetings, receptions, and educational programs that teach visitors about medieval Dutch fortifications.
In 1490, the castle gained notoriety as a base for robbers under Hendrik Ense, leading to multiple conflicts and eventual intervention by Charles of Gelre.
