Old Stadion, Multi-purpose stadium in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Old Stadion was a brick-built sports facility in Amsterdam designed to hold around 29,000 spectators under covered stands. The infrastructure lacked the necessary features for track and cycling events, which limited its range of activities.
Architect Harry Elte designed and built this facility between 1913 and 1914 after winning a prestigious architectural competition in 1912. The building shaped Amsterdam's sports development in the early modern period until its demolition in 1929.
The stadium helped establish Amsterdam's sports identity by drawing crowds to watch football matches and national competitions in the early years. Its legacy remains visible in the neighborhood name Stadionbuurt, which still refers to where this venue once stood.
The facility was designed specifically for football events and other ball sports, though track and field athletes could not use it. Today the venue no longer stands, so visitors can only experience its presence through the neighborhood's history and urban layout.
The stadium was a modern sports architecture of its time and influenced the later construction of Amsterdam's Olympic Stadium. Though the building vanished, the residential district and neighborhood name continue to mark where this sporting landmark once stood.
