Oostereng, forest and estate near Wageningen
Oostereng is a forest and estate spanning across the municipalities of Renkum, Ede, and Wageningen, comprising coniferous and broadleaf woods interspersed with small streams and open clearings. The site features an arboretum with varied tree species and a network of walking paths that connect different landscape sections.
The estate was established in 1843 when landowners replanted cleared areas and built a farm complex. After significant damage during World War II, the state forest service took over management and has maintained the site as a nature reserve ever since.
The site offers several walking routes of about five kilometers that wind through forests and open areas. Wear sturdy footwear and plan time to explore different landscapes at a leisurely pace.
The arboretum on the grounds was restored by volunteers between 2011 and 2020 after years of neglect and now showcases various tree species. This community-driven restoration effort transformed it into a meaningful example of landscape renewal.
