Latin School

The Latin School sits in central Deventer and blends Gothic design with Empire-style elements across its facade. The two-story building displays crafted details from different periods of its long use.

The building opened in 1485 as a grammar school and remained a center of classical learning for over three centuries. Its closure in 1839 marked the end of a long era of language instruction in the city.

The school takes its name from its primary subject of instruction, making it a center for learned education in the medieval city. Visitors today see a building that reflects how important classical learning was to the community.
