Havezate De Haere

Havezate De Haere is a sprawling estate with a country house and surrounding parkland set across extensive grounds. Beyond the residence, the property includes several outbuildings, working farms, forests, meadows, and fields.

Origins of this place reach back to the 14th century, and the current house was built in 1559 for Hendrik van Oldeneel. A major redesign followed in 1778 under Jan van Suchtelen's direction.

The gardens blend French geometric patterns with English landscape elements that developed over generations. Visitors can see both styles reflected in the maintained pathways and planted areas today.

The house now contains offices and a ground-floor catering facility for visitors. The property is walkable throughout, though you may want to check ahead about accessibility for certain areas if mobility is a concern.

During the Cold War, the property was integrated into the IJssellinie defense line with underground bunkers and casemates built on the grounds. These military structures alongside an inundation system reveal how this peaceful landscape held strategic importance during that era.
