De Nieuwe Veste, Cultural centre and public library in Breda, Netherlands
De Nieuwe Veste is a cultural center and public library in Breda featuring contemporary architecture with an internal courtyard and a distinctive curved roof structure. The building also contains a Makersbase workshop equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and vinyl plotters for creative work.
The building was designed by architects Herman Hertzberger and his team between 1991 and 1993. The project successfully integrated a medieval building known as Huis Ocrum into its contemporary design.
The center hosts classes and workshops in music, visual arts, photography, theater, dance, and writing. Visitors come here to learn new skills and pursue creative interests.
The center is located in downtown Breda on Molenstraat 6 and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should expect it to be open on most days with various activities happening throughout the venue.
The building was specially designed around rare mulberry trees that are over 200 years old. These trees influenced the spatial layout so much that the architects created tree-like supporting columns throughout the structure.
