Dierenpark Wassenaar, Former zoological garden in Wassenaar, Netherlands
Dierenpark Wassenaar was a zoological garden near Den Haag spanning approximately 15 hectares. The park featured multiple animal enclosures designed for large species like elephants and tigers alongside aviaries for tropical and native birds.
The park was founded in 1937 by automobile importer Pieter Louwman and incorporated several facilities from the earlier Haagsche Diergaarde, including an eagle aviary. It operated as a recreational destination for decades before eventually closing.
The zoo maintained active breeding programs that resulted in 508 animal births across 91 species during 1981 alone.
The park provided clear pathways and directional markers to help visitors navigate between different enclosures and sections. Resting areas were scattered throughout the grounds, making it easy to spend several hours exploring.
The Paradijshal, built in 1961, allowed visitors to walk through a large aviary where multiple bird species flew freely around them. This walk-through structure created an immersive experience rarely found in other zoos of its time.
