Head office Albert Heijn, Corporate headquarters in Zaanstad, Netherlands
The Albert Heijn head office is a large office complex in Zaanstad, built around a ten-story circular tower from which five wings spread outward. The whole building follows a curved line along Provincialeweg road, giving it a recognizable shape that stands out when viewed from street level.
Architect J.W. Hanrath designed the complex taking inspiration from Landhuis De Breul, an 1833 country estate that had been turned into an office villa in 1927. This reference to an older regional building shaped the way the new complex was conceived.
The building reflects how Albert Heijn grew from a neighborhood grocery store into one of the Netherlands' largest retailers. Visitors can see this transformation expressed through the modern design, which balances tradition with forward-thinking vision.
The complex is close to Zaandam railway station, so it is easy to reach by train or bus. The curved shape and tower are best seen from the outside, walking along Provincialeweg.
The building serves as headquarters not only for Albert Heijn but also for Gall & Gall and Etos, two other retail brands belonging to the same Ahold group. This means that one single complex is the working base for several familiar Dutch retail names.
