Grafmonument van de familie Dorrepaal

The Dorrepaal family monument is a tomb at Zorgvlied cemetery featuring a marble angel sculpture kneeling with a laurel wreath, created by sculptor Frans Stracké in 1886. The structure includes a tomb with a sloping cover stone, four lifting eyes, and a gabled roof covered in slate.

The monument was built as a tomb for Georgius Leonardus Dorrepaal, a merchant and banker born in Semarang in 1816 who died in Amsterdam in 1883. It received protected status as a national monument in 2008 due to its architectural value.

The monument reflects 19th-century Dutch burial customs, with architectural elements that were typical for tombs of prominent families. The design shows how wealthy households chose to honor their deceased through distinctive stone structures and decorative features.

The monument is located at Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam and can be reached on foot from the entrance, with well-maintained walkways between graves. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the cemetery is quieter.

Two drums flank the monument, a symbol of the Dorrepaal family tradition that set them apart through these unusual burial elements. Such drums are rarely seen on other Dutch tombs from this era.
