Sint-Gertrudiskerk, Utrecht, Municipal monument church in Rivierenwijk, Netherlands.
Sint-Gertrudiskerk is a church building in the Rivierenwijk neighborhood of Utrecht featuring a five-nave structure with a square floor plan measuring about 30 meters on each side. The tower rises approximately 42.5 meters and defines the skyline of the district.
The foundation stone was laid on November 7, 1923, and architect Wolter te Riele completed the construction for the first mass on Christmas Eve 1924. The building then served as a house of worship for over 90 years before it changed its purpose.
The church was dedicated to Saint Gertrude of Nivelles and served the Catholic community in Utrecht until its final Easter service in 2018. The sacred space continues to shape the character of the neighborhood and recalls its religious importance to local residents.
After extensive renovations that preserved the main organ and central space, the building reopened in March 2024 as a sports center. The location is easily accessible and now offers new opportunities for community activities and recreational sports.
The organ bench was crafted from wood salvaged from former church pews and the organ's wooden lattice replicates the stained glass design of the confessionals. These handmade details show how elements from the earlier church were woven into the new sports center.
