Torenfort aan de Ossenmarkt

Torenfort aan de Ossenmarkt is a round fortification with two floors and exceptionally thick walls that made this structure particularly solid. The distinctive circular shape is typical of 19th century defensive architecture and defines the place's character.

This fortification was built in 1861 as part of the New Dutch Water Line, designed to protect the Vecht banks and the Amsterdam-Hilversum railway. It was an important component in a larger defensive system meant to guard the region against military threats.

The building now functions as an art center and music school for the local community. Artists and musicians gather there regularly, giving the place an active creative role in neighborhood life.

The location sits at Ossenmarkt in Weesp and is easily visible from outside, though access is limited to special occasions. It is worth exploring the surroundings and discovering the nearby architecture and the Vecht riverbanks.

The roof was covered with a thick layer of sand to better protect the structure against more advanced weapon technology. This adaptation shows how defensive structures were adjusted to deal with changing military risks.
