Tapijnkazerne, Military barracks complex in Maastricht, Netherlands
Tapijnkazerne is a large former military complex on Maastricht's south side, featuring rows of brick buildings spread across extensive grounds bordered by the Jeker river and Sint Hubertuslaan. The site now houses educational spaces, classrooms, and study areas, though its original barracks layout remains visible in the building arrangements.
Built in 1919 on land reclaimed from a filled Jeker tributary, the complex originally served the 13th Infantry Regiment and later housed NATO forces for decades. The barracks were handed to Maastricht University in 2010, ending its military use.
Students now move through the complex daily, creating a blend of campus life within buildings originally designed for military discipline. This shift from barracks to lecture halls has transformed how people experience and use the space.
The complex sits on Maastricht's southern edge and is easily reached by public transport or on foot along the Jeker river paths. Bear in mind that much of the site remains active university property, so access to some buildings and areas may be limited during classes.
Interior spaces are labeled using the NATO phonetic alphabet, an unusual detail linking the site's military history with its current academic purpose. This naming system persists even as buildings serve students rather than soldiers.
