Big Spriel

Big Spriel is a Renaissance Revival manor near Putten with a 25 meter tower featuring a clock face and surrounded by 3.5 hectares of landscaped grounds. The property includes manicured gardens and forest paths that branch out from the main building in various directions.

Wouter Blokhuis, an administrator returning from the Dutch East Indies, commissioned architect Johannes Pannevis to build the estate in 1882. This founding period marked the creation of a substantial private country residence in the region.

The interior displays marble Art Nouveau fireplaces, high ceilings, stained glass windows, and carved woodwork that reflect Dutch craftsmanship traditions. These design elements remain visible throughout the rooms and tell stories of 19th century artistic taste.

The estate is located at Garderenseweg 150 and now operates as a specialized care facility for individuals with memory conditions. Visits are restricted and generally require prior arrangement with the facility and its residents.

The park was designed by Dirk Wattez and contains a star-shaped forest with visual axes extending from the manor through the changing landscape. This geometric layout creates interesting focal points and shapes how visitors experience the natural grounds.
