Hirschgebouw, Heritage building at Leidseplein, Netherlands
The Hirschgebouw spans five floors with a concrete skeleton structure covered in gray sandstone from Arzviller and features a distinctive dome tower.
The building opened on November 14, 1912, as a luxury department store under Hirsch & Cie, operating continuously at this location until 1976.
The structure represents the evolution of retail architecture in Amsterdam, combining French-influenced design with modern construction techniques of the early 1900s.
Located at Leidseplein 25, the building now houses multiple establishments including an Apple Store and maintains its status as a national monument.
The building required over 1,600 wooden foundation piles and 9,000 cubic meters of earth removal during its initial construction phase.
