Dolhuis

The Dolhuis is a historic structure in central Dordrecht featuring Gothic gables with curved details and distinctive pointed arch openings on its eastern wall. Exposed medieval timber beams remain visible throughout the building, giving it authentic character from its construction period.

Built in 1463 as a monastery for a religious community, the building became a treatment facility for mental illness beginning in the 1570s. Its role in early psychiatric care shaped attitudes toward health and healing in the Dutch Golden Age.

Today the building serves as a social space where people gather for music, events, and celebration, drawing visitors into its historic rooms. The Gothic details and solid structure create a sense of continuity between its past life caring for the vulnerable and its present role bringing the community together.

The wooden beams embedded in the walls date to the 1400s and remain visible, offering a direct view of medieval building techniques. Few structures retain these original supports, making the carpentry craftsmanship distinctly recognizable to modern visitors.
